Notes & Reviews:

Volume 2 of CPO's Julius Roentgen edition presents one of the great works from the next-to-last year of the composer’s life: his lyrical setting of numbers from Goethe’s Faust in 'Aus Goethes Faust' for orchestra, organ, choir, and six vocal soloists! Holland’s most multi-faceted composer stands out for his musical interest in Goethe’s works. He composed three further works inspired by Goethe during mid-1931: the Symphony No. 17 Aus Goethes Wilhelm Meister, the Symphony No. 20 on Goethe’s Prooemion, and a song on Goethe’s Prometheus.

Gramophone Magazine
The cantata is persuasively performed, with Machteld Baumans the pick of the soloists and David Porcelijn securing attentive orchestral playing. Sound and annotations are well up to CPO's usual standard.
