Notes & Reviews:

Courbet's output displays an astonishing range of subjects, styles, and formats. It conveys a well-nigh revolutionary creative force which may recall that of the great watersheds marked by the creations of Beethoven, Berlioz, and Wagner. This ability to set one’s face against tradition, indeed to break with it, is symptomatic of genius only if it points the way to a new path of lasting value. It is a powerful gift that Courbet shares with Beethoven, Berlioz and Wagner, who, along with other composers, will accompany this musical journey through his painting.
