Notes & Reviews:
Those who have loved this British composer's music have known his only commercial recordings - The Wasps Overture and the Ballet 'Old King Cole' (1925) and his extraordinary 1937 HMV discs of the Symphony No. 4 - as definitive. But thanks to the efforts, more than half a century ago, of a recording engineer named Eric Spain, whose custom-built recorder took down this 1952 performance of the Symphony No. 5, we can hear what one critic has described as "the best performance of any Vaughan Williams Symphony."
