Album Remarks & Appraisals:

The follow-up to their debut Noumena. Though the music on this release is familiar, there's a depth to both the performance and production that feels new. The direct-to-analog tape mix is used as another instrument to help shape each song, channeling the mythos of late 60s jazz and late 70s dub classics. They've also expanded their influences with shades of Afro-Beat and Disco-Soul.

Album Notes

Personnel: Danny Grody (guitar, keyboards); Jeff Jacobs (trumpet, electronics); Safa Shokrai (upright bass); Rich Douthit (drums, percussion).

Audio Mixer: Jay Pellicci.

Recording information: 09/2007.

This amalgamation of members from Tarentel, Lazarus, and Halifax Pier may appeal to a similar crowd as labelmates Explosions From The Sky, but their instrumental post-rock dabbles in a much more sophisticated brand of dub-jazz. In fact, with its shuffling stand-up basslines and jumpy trumpet, MEMORY DRAWINGS, at its jauntier moments, is nearly a wordless Soul Coughing. Elsewhere, ambience dominates via shimmering guitars that let Jeff J. Jacobs's horn flutter in the foreground. By hopping between moods and tempos, MEMORY resonates where other imitators would dive into corny cliché.
