Danceries - Claude Gervaise / Mendoze, Ensemble Musica Antiqua, Novus Brass Quartet

Notes & Reviews:

As opposed to Italy, with its ornate, inspired and at times even grandiloquent style of music, music in France was characterized by a genre more lively and less verbose: the air de danse. The melodies of these dances were called timbres; they appeared in various forms depending on the audiences for which they were written. These melodies were soon referred to as harmonized danses de cour or danceries (in Claude Gervaise’s case). Gerviase’s compositions, far from being fixed for eternity, leave interpreters the freedom to experience and shape this music anew, time and time again.
