Album Reviews:

Down Beat (p.71) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This music is mercilessly intelligent, but it's balanced by a think-fast fleetness. With every new permutation, dynamic shift or retrenchment, the listener almost expects the group to stumble or hit a wall. It never happens."

JazzTimes (pp.100-101) - "Tension and suspense are two key qualities on DOOR....An engaging and important release....The deep-seated rapport continues through the album..."

Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.48) - "DOOR is serious contemporary jazz that demands a space of its own, preferably a very dark one, so that the listener can actively engage with its compositions."

Album Notes

Fieldwork: Steve Lehman (alto saxophone); Vijay Iyer (piano); Tyshawn Sorey (drums).

Fieldwork is a cutting-edge jazz trio consisting of pianist Vijay Iyer, alto saxophonist Steve Lehman, and percussionist Tyshawn Sorey. Their approach is playing thorny, complex jazz with the precision of a classical ensemble and the gusto of a rock band. While each musician is highly talented, no one player dominates--DOOR is truly a collaborative effort. It's an intricate but ultimately rewarding challenge to hear just where composition leaves off and inspired improvisation begins, in a zone somewhere between the pensive reserve of Paul Bley and the abandon of Cecil Taylor.
