Ensemble Composers

Notes & Reviews:

Alessandro Grandi is regarded as one of the finest composers of the Italian 17th century. Probably born in Ferrara; as a young man he served as "maestro di musica" for two of the most important confraternities in the city, the Accademia della Morte and the Accademia dello Santo Spirito. He would leave Ferrara to serve as the assistant to Monteverdi in Venice after 1617. Grandi's motets interweave prima prattica polyphony with seconda prattica solo song and ensemble, many striking a delicate balance between the two. The texts range from liturgy and biblical verse to freely composed poetry. Musica Secreta was founded in 1990, and it is dedicated to the recovery, performance and recording of music associated with women in the early modern period. Their mission is not just to promote works by female composers (and male composers who worked with them) but also to increase knowledge of and restore respect for women's agency in Renaissance and early Baroque music.
