The Monastery of Montserrat was founded almost ten centuries ago. From its very beginning, when pilgrims started to visit the sanctuary of the Virgin who was worshipped there, music has had a constant and very important presence. Joan Cererols has been traditionally considered the pre-eminent figure and the true founder of Montserrat's Music School. As a child, he joined the school choir in the monastery and further received his musical education there. The collection known as the "Misses tonals" ("Tonal Masses") is a series made up of six masses composed according to a preconceived plan and in each of the six Gregorian modes, which may be dated back to Cererols' first compositional period. This CD of liturgical music is complemented by two organ pieces of the Hispanic Baroque repertoire (the Iriberia and Cabanilles works), performed by David Malet on the Baroque organ of the Chapel of Sant Sever in Barcelona, which dates back to the beginning of the 18th century.
