Notes & Reviews:
Hans Hopf was one of the last true heldentenors in opera history. Alongside Hans Beirer, Hopf was probably the last authentic proponent of that type of voice, which was systematically disappearing sometime around 1960 and today has probably died out completely. With a sonorous middle range, virtuosic mastery of the passaggio and an always reliable, metallic high range that carried well, his voice was in keeping with the type preferred by Wagner: a tenor with a baritone like timbre. In his impulsive style of performance, particularly in combination with an ideal partner, Hopf always achieved touching, stirring and sometimes deeply moving effects. In several of his great roles, no successor has ever been found, at least not vocally.
