The work of two old stalwarts of the progressive hardcore scene, AMPLE FIRE WITHIN pairs Iceburn's Densley Gentry and Engine Kid's Gregg Anderson (with a host of guests), for a spacey exploration of subtle jazz-influenced tones. The long, minimalist songs allow an atmosphere of dread to build through the effective use of background noises and throbbing hums, in addition to Gentry's sparse, murmured vocals. Bursts of noise act as punctuation marks on an otherwise placid but still dark journey. By the album's closer, "Dark Matter," a thoroughly unsettled feeling is all but inevitable. You don't just listen to AMPLE FIRE WITHIN, you absorb it.
