Ralph Vaughan Williams evolved a highly personal sound derived in varying degrees from impressionism, folk song modality, Tudor church music and a very personal response to the English language. He had served a long and hard-fought apprenticeship before he succeeded in developing a technique, which would allow him to articulate his strikingly personal musical vision, and allowed him to find himself as a composer.
