This month's addition to the Aulis Sallinen edition features his Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5, two highly dramatic and expressionistic works within his overall oeuvre. His Symphony No. 3, composed in 1974 as a commissioned work for the Finnish Radio, was the first symphony in which he availed himself of a multi-movement form. Sallinen himself has said of the immanent set of laws governing his composing, "The third symphony was to develop the one-movement idea of its predecessors, but something opposed the boundaries of an extended single movement."
