Album Summary
Performer
Kazusa Mizutani (Bassoon)
Notes & Reviews:
For those who have diligently followed the progress of modern Japanese composition, this composer's music ranks particularly high. A composer of seven Symphonies, two Piano Concertos and several shorter pieces and operas, he shares with at least one of his teachers, Akira Miyoshi, the ability to reflect his native culture as well as write in a style that has strong, "international" appeal. The title piece, "The License of Blaze," is a bassoon concerto that seeks to bring out what he calls "the hidden passion" of an instrument often viewed as plain and humorous. "I wanted to let this passion burn as an embodied flame." The last work is of special interest, too: 3776 meters is the height of Mt. Fuji, and in this piece, Ikebe wants to bring attention to how the environmental problems found there interfered with the mountain being registered as one of the World Natural Heritage sites.
