Notes & Reviews:
Ugale, Edole, Ventspils, Liepaja, Vilkene, Valmiera, Zalenieki, Riga - the MDG recording team made eight scheduled stops in Latvia and visited the two cities that for many years vied to be the site of the world's largest organ. The CD booklet offers detailed information about the historical instruments in words and pictures. It was only for a year that the capital city of Riga could proudly claim to have the world's largest organ, an instrument with 124 stops built by Walcker and Company of Wurttemberg. Adolph Wendt in faraway Liepaja, Latvia's third largest city, was not content to be second best. This organist at Trinity Church had constantly enlarged his Contius organ from 1779 with the world record as his goal. In 1885 he commissioned that his instrument be expanded to include 131 stops.
