Down Beat (p.64) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Like two old friends sidling up to the bar, reed player David Murray and the late pianist Mal Waldron demonstrate that magnificent quality of jazz -- intimate conversation -- with this modest recording..."
Personnel: David Murray (saxophone); Mal Waldron (piano).
Recorded a year before Mal Waldron's death, SILENCE pairs the late piano legend with reedist extraordinaire Dave Murray for a thoroughly satisfying duet date. Both musicians are known for their versatility, and for their ability to masterfully mine both traditional forms and left-field exploration.
The duo explore both modes on SILENCE, alternating melodic, lyrical expression with more free-blowing tendencies. The material, which includes originals and covers (their treatments of Duke Ellington's "All Too Soon" and Miles Davis's "Jean-Pierre" are highlights), is rendered expansively, with the sensitivity, passion, and nuance that can come only from musicians of this caliber.
