JazzTimes (p.90) - "[Liebman] sounds stunning....[He] is one of the few soprano saxophonists who make that horn sound muscular, as he does on the original 'Get Me Back to the Apple,' which starts with solos and works its way back to a theme."
Personnel: Paolo Benedettini (double bass); David Liebman (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Roberto Tarenzi (piano); Tony Arco (drums).
Alternating between tenor and soprano duties, saxophonist Dave Liebman is best known for his several-years' tenure with Miles Davis. Which is a shame, since Liebman is a distinctive and versatile--hard bop, fusion, free, etc.--soloist and bandleader as well. NEGATIVE SPACE features Liebman's keening, fiery-but-focused John Coltrane-inspired playing with an accomplished trio of Italian musicians. In a program of (mostly) originals, one of SPACE's two covers is a freewheeling, passionate version of "Afro Blue," a song identified with Coltrane himself. Those smitten with the great tenor saxophonist as well as Wayne Shorter circa early `60's will be enthralled with this set.
