Rossen Balkanski was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and is representative of a small group of artists from the Balkans who are both performing concert guitarists and composers. He has won prizes at several international guitar competitions and is an active performer and teacher at the Pancho Vladigerov Academy in Sofia. He has remained in Bulgaria, unlike many of his colleagues, where he has endeavored to develop a distinctly personal, highly expressive style that combines elements of Bulgarian folklore with classical structure. The guitarist on the recording, Gerhard Reichenbach, won the International Guitar Competition in 1989 and is currently professor of guitar at the State Conservatoryof Thessaloniki, Greece.
