Heading up the four titles in the new Vaughan Williams series from EMI is this 2-CD set featuring the first general CD release of the Fifth Symphony with the RPO conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson, and the Sixth with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Berglund, as well as Berglund’s muscular account of the Fourth Symphony with the RPO. An added bonus is the legendary Tallis Fantasia recorded by Constantin Silvestri inWinchester Cathedral in 1967.
