Notes & Reviews:

Fifty years ago one of the great magicians of the orchestra passed away: Florent Schmitt. The Lorraine-born, Parisian-established composer, recipient of the Prix de Rome, was drawn to the splendors of orientalism in music from early on. The 'Tragedie de Salome', 'Salammbo', 'Oriana', among many others, reflect his infatuation with heady flavors. For the execution of Shakespeare's tragedy - 'Antoine et Cleopatre' (Antony and Cleopatra) - in its translation by Andre Gide, Schmitt thought up and illustrated six episodes from the drama.
