In 1997 the Artis Quartet was awarded the Alexander Zemlinsky Award, beginning a close cooperation with Nimbus Records. Their first project, the complete Zemlinsky String Quartets, immediately gained outstanding recognition from international critics, including the Diapason d'Or.

Viennese composer Egon Wellesz was very much a product of his times. Mahler's conducting was an early influence, while Schoenberg and von Hofmannsthal were influential associates.
