Album Reviews:

JazzTimes (p.95) - "Tossing in just enough flourishes to infuse his syncopated rhythms with some flash, Portinho is always exactly where he should be, or on his way to someplace the listener hasn't thought of."

Album Notes

Portinho Trio: Portinho (drums); Klaus Mueller (piano); Itaiguara Brandao, Lincoln Goines (upright bass).

Personnel: Jay Ashby (trombone, percussion).

While Portinho is usually thought of as a Brazilian drummer/percussionist, he also belongs to the fraternity of drummers that includes Connie Kay and Grady Tate. Like them, he's tasteful and lively, while forgoing flash and bombast. The Portinho Trio combines the Brazilian genres of bossa and samba within the elegantly mainstream jazz piano trio format. VINHO DE PORTO features guest Jay Ashby's trombone, whose style dovetails with that of Portinho's. Ashby's playing is poised and melodious, almost French horn-like. This trio-plus-one opts for a concise, all killer-no filler approach, with no performance much over six minutes. With a program of Brazilian tunes and a couple of American jazz standards, VINHO very nicely balances the sultry and the swinging.
