Notes & Reviews:

While we recognize the signature of the symphonist Brahms in his compressed, massive score, the Brahms Sonata op. 120, 1 as arranged by Luciano Berio has more of the effect of an instrumental chamber concerto. It is thus that Brahms' oeuvre is expanded to include a great symphony (his "Fifth") and a clarinet concerto, with the orchestral version enhancing the expressive power of the original works in the case of both arrangements. On CPO's new recording they are interpreted outstandingly and intensively by the Rhine Philharmonic State Orchestra under Daniel Raiskin and with the clarinetist Karl Heinz Steffens.
