Seattle's Mammifer are as huge and unreadable as a marble slab. Rather then being played, their instrumental compositions seem to unfold, revealing their mysteries at a pace that requires patience. The reward is a unique epiphany in sound, as pianos give way to scouring feedback, ominous strings, and an un-nameable throb. Deceptively pretty and sometimes jaunty pianos carry on though "Annwn," but the undercurrent of deeper noises constantly roils beneath the surface. "Black Running Water" builds slowly before taking flight with soaring guitars, distant drum hits, and echoing bells. Mammifer paints with sound, making words superfluous.
