American classical composers often get unfairly overshadowed by their European counterparts, and a great deal of powerful, groundbreaking new music has passed under the radar as a result. Simon Rattle has shown a great commitment to bring this music into the public eye, and his recordings on this 7-CD set with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta go a long way toward achieving this goal. Together, Rattle and these orchestras cut to the heart of the minimalism of John Adams, the stylish elegance of Leonard Bernstein, and the cool jazz of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington.
