Down Beat (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] good, solid organ-tenor sax swing from start to finish. It's also a nice reminder of the talents of saxophonist Jerry Weldon."
JazzTimes (p.82) - "[T]he group stays in a laidback mood....The playing is consistently effective, no matter what instrument is being used."
Personnel: Joey DeFrancesco (organ); Jerry Weldon (tenor saxophone); Byron Landham (drum).
Joey DeFrancesco is one of the reasons for the popular resurgence of the soul-jazz style and the Hammond B-3 organ sound which is identified with it. Philadelphian DeFrancesco learned his craft in the local jazz scene, sitting in with organ wizards Jack McDuff and Richard "Groove" Holmes before going on to the bands of demigods Miles Davis and John McLaughlin. Besides his formidable technique, DeFrancesco possesses a sumptuous tone, which saturates JOEY D!, his latest on High Note. Plus he's got the imagination to cover "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and make it sizzle and smolder. Accompanied by only a saxophonist (with a suitably big tone) and drummer, D! delivers rollicking, smart, big-hearted jazz.
