This compilation of recordings by Antonina Nazhdanova (1873-1950) draws attention to one of the great Russian singers, who was well-known and revered in Russia but received far too little recognition outside the borders of the former Soviet Union. Her voice was the equal of the most important coloratura singers on the European operatic stage. She studied voice at the Moscow Conservatory and was hired by the Bolshoi Theatre. She remained true to the Bolshoi for 30 years, with only one tour outside Russia where she performed at the Metropolitan Opera and all the rest of the world's great opera houses. After ending her singing career, she dedicated herself to teaching at the Opera Studio of the Bolshoi Theatre.
