Notes & Reviews:

Karl Goldmark numbers among those composers whose former fame and glory have faded to a faint glimmer. His piano quintets display typical Goldmarkian inventions and discoveries. The Quintet op. 30 printed in 1879 exhibits instrumental effects of the greatest sophistication and a modulatory flexibility rooted in Schubert while seeming to overshadow him. The later Quintet op. 54, published a year after Goldmark's death, also exemplifies his typical employment of harmony, sharpened motivic work, and permanent modulations.
