Notes & Reviews:

Hedwig von Debicka (1881-1970) was born into an old Polish-Russian aristocratic family and grew up in Dembicki. She received her first training at the Warsaw Conservatory and auditioned for the conductor Pietro Stermich de Valcrociata during a summer festival held in Warsaw. He recognized the talent of the then 16-year-old and made sure she received the best available instruction. She was hired for the opera house in Prague and then spent some time in Vienna. Ultimately she accepted an engagement at the Berlin Opera. She also appeared frequently in concert and her flawless control of her fine soprano voice made her an outstanding interpreter of early music. After difficult years during and after World War II, she was given a professorship at the Academy of Music in Vienna.
