Notes & Reviews:

Alfred Deller set the standard for countertenors for many years. His voice was very light with a wonderful lyric quality. He was most effective in the more contemplative pieces, but when necessary he was able to sing very florid pieces extremely well. Without Alfred Deller, the international recognition of countertenor voice might not have come as quickly as it did. These recordings also represent the birth of the early music movement, as the leading lights of this movement all began their long career by an association with Alfred Deller and Vanguard Records. Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Sir Neville Marriner all made their recording debuts on the recordings included in this marvelous set.
