The Spanish conductor Enrique Fernandez Arbos came from a family of military bandmasters and had been a child prodigy. He was celebrated at different times as violinist, violin teacher, composer and conductor. After the First World War, he became associated with conducting modern Spanish repertoire. This release compiles various recordings Arbos made with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra during 1928, in which he championed then comparatively little-known Spanish music, many of the composers having been his friends. Of special note on this disc is Arbos' own atmospheric orchestral picture-postcard 'Noche de Arabia', which has remained unplayed since the composer's death.
