While it never completely went away, the jazz organ combo format (organ, drums, saxophone and/or guitar) has undergone a renaissance since the `90s. One of the players riding that wave is guitarist Greg Skaff. He's paid his dues with Stanley Turrentine (himself a veteran of the organ sound) and David "Fathead" Newman, and has learned his lessons well as his style leans towards the bluesy, burnished tone of Grant Green and pre-Top 40 George Benson. But on the smoking opener, "Willie D," and the blistering closer, "Fast As You Can" (a Fiona Apple song), he lets his rock side shine. The rest of SKYLINE is in the vein of classic slow-burning soul-jazz a la Benson, Green, and Dr. Lonnie Smith.
