The present CD features a series of rare recordings made by the German singer between 1946 and 1954. Some of them portray her in roles which she seldom sang, like Violetta from Verdi's Traviata - which Schwarzkopf abandoned after listening to Callas's interpretation - or Leonora from Beethoven's Fidelio (Schwarzkopf was, as everybody knows, a peerless Marzelline). Also in the Italian repertoire, for which she seemed less suited, the young Schwarzkopf was able to express her class of interpreter, despite the slight harshness of her pronunciation, which in time she would correct. Finally, is her reading of the only French piece in this CD, the moving Depuis le jour from Charpentier's Louise, sung with deep-felt intensity and a perfect phrasing.
