Remarks:
'English Lute Songs' covers a variety of styles by composers such as Blow, Dowland, Campion, Lawes and Purcell, with works for voice and lute and some for lute alone. It is a disc that aims to look beyond the standard repertoire for countertenor and lute and hopefully introduce listeners to some lesser known pieces which will delight and enthrall. Robin Blaze and Elizabeth Kenny have performed these works together on the concert stage to great acclaim.Notes:
The combining of music and poetry in the courts of seventeenth century England was partly the result of an artistic movement that grew out of a need for entertainment by the wealthy. This style of theatrical art gave birth to the 'ayre', a genre characterized by pairing the voice and the English lute. Often dramatic and melancholy in mood, these lute pieces were presumably the Elizabethan equivalent of today's modern soap operas.Hyperion has done a superior job in packaging thirty such songs built entirely on the perspicuity of the voice and lute. All pieces are performed by Robin Blaze, countertenor, and Elizabeth Kenny, lute, and include a comprehensive range of works by such noted composers as Robert Johnson, John Dowland, and Henry Purcell.
The calming sound of Blaze's high-ranged vocals coupled with the affability of Kenny's masterful lute playing lends itself well to the ears of its listeners. An excerpt from one of composer John Banister's lute pieces says everything of this collection. 'Give me my lute; in thee some ease I find 'Where all is sad and gloomy as my mind.'
