Album Notes
Though pianist Vince Guaraldi is deservedly famous for his work on the animated TV specials YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, he had a substantial career before those triumphs, not least of which was represented by his big instrumental hit, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," which is happily included on this Fantasy collection of ESSENTIAL STANDARDS. Guaraldi was a commercial jazz musician of the best kind, a concise, vivid stylist who easly absorbed Latin and bossa nova influences through his associations with vibraphonist Cal Tjader and Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete. And this collection is actually a welcome opportunity to hear the not as well-known traditional side of the pianist, the "jazz standards" side, which he excelled at just as much as all the others. Besides "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," highlights include "Moon River," a lovely take on "Days Of Wine and Roses" with Sete, and a different kind of traditional on "Greensleeves" from A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS.
