Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) is recognized today as one of the most important composers of 19th century lieder after Franz Schubert, and as a pioneer who set new standards for the next generation of Jugendstil composers such as Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Franz Schreker. His unique symbiosis of words and music forms the stylistic means allowing him to turn the poets' portraits of their souls into audible psychograms, with an effect that still electrifies listeners today. No lieder composer before him had placed the poem's meaning so thoroughly in the foreground. His sensitivity to the text was the basis for his creativity but also an artistic creed. The following generation of composers was strongly inspired by his example in writing art songs.
