Born in Romania, Virginia Zeani studied in Bucharest and Italy. She made her debut in 1948 at Bologna's Teatro Duse singing the role that was to become her most famous in some 650 subsequent performances: Violetta in La traviata. There are no recordings from Zeani's early phase; her career and vocal development were not documented until the mid-1950s, for the most part in live recordings.
