Notes & Reviews:

Theodore Gouvy was born as a Prussian subject in a town outside Saarbrucken by the name of Goffontaine (today's Scheidt-Schafbrucke) in 1819. His life as an artist was spent between the opposing poles of Germany and France, and when he died in 1898, he was regarded as a Frenchman in Germany and as a German in France. Gouvy was from a well-to-do family and did not have to live from his composing. It certainly would have been difficult for him to do so inasmuch as he assiduously avoided the opera - for the French the only genuinely valid genre - and first and foremost composed symphonies - which met with high esteem in Germany. Neither his fellow Frenchmen Berlioz and Onslow nor any other foreign composer could match Gouvy's performance figures in Leipzig during the 1850s. This month marks the beginning of CPO's complete recording of his symphonic oeuvre.
