Notes & Reviews:
This oratorio in three acts was first performed in London on February 26, 1752 at Covent Garden, conducted by the composer. This recording is based on the version from 1758 and comes from a live production in June 2008 at the Frauenkirche Dresden. Sung in English, the full text is included.
This account of arguably the greatest of Handel's late works captures its elegiac spirit perfectly...the account rises to a moving climax with Markus Schäfer's noble Jephtha and Miriam Meyer's heartbreaking Iphis attains real intensity in the slow section of her final aria.
