Notes & Reviews:
The Aeolian Harp or The Triumph of Music and Love is a romantic opera in four acts written in 1807-08 by Justin Heinrich Knecht. No one knows why this opera languished for two centuries, but it is gratifying that it has been brought back to life with these performances.
BBC Music Magazine
Christina Landshamer as Melilla has an agile voice, superb diction and a good high range... Mark Adler as Selim is a delightfully fresh, natural-sounding tenor... and Selim's servant Bull (sung by Patrick Probeschin) and his lover Bulline (Andrea Lauren Brown) give characterful performances. The orchestra is warm-toned and spirited...
Knecht's colourful score is performed with tremendous vitality by the period-instrument Hofkapelle Stuttgart, which boasts a vivacious woodwind section whose special duty throughout the opera is to emulate the mythical Aeolian harp... The cast of singers is uniformly good. Mark Adler sings emphatically and copes admirably with the ardent aria "Was der Liebe", which would be a severe test for any great Mozartian tenor. Christina Landshamer sings Melilla with ideal fluency and heroic resolve.
