Notes & Reviews:
The existence of Georg Philipp Telemann's oratorio 'Der aus der Loewengrube errettete Daniel' (Daniel, Delivered from the Lions' Den) for the Feast of St. Michael was completely unknown until recently. All of the extant copies were incorrectly ascribed to Handel. Today we know not only that Telemann was clearly its composer but also the name of the librettist - Albrecht Jacob Zell - and the date of the premiere - 1731 in St. Peter's Church in Hamburg. The work is so genuinely Telemannian - enormously colorful, highly imaginative, and always hitting the dramatic point on target - that one can only wonder how it was ever ascribed to anybody else!
”This is prime Telmann at the highest level, well recorded. Highly recommended.”-FanfareNotes & Reviews:
