Notes & Reviews:

Thanks to in-depth research into original manuscripts, Jordi Savall reveals the hidden beauties of Irish and Scottish music from XVII to XIXth Century. The transcription from fiddle to baroque viol sounds so obvious that everyone realizes the closeness of traditional and ancient repertoires at once. Some of the pieces are irresistibly vivid and virtuosic, some are more melancholic - but all of them deserve the renaissance Jordi Savall offers them in this collection, where he partners with harp virtuoso Andrew Lawrence-King.

The Celtic Viol is set to be the most successful demonstration yet of Jordi Savall's extraordinary technique and depth of feeling for the indivisible oneness of music, be it written or oral, "classical" or "folk. An admirer of Celtic music for thirty years, in recent times Savall has worked his way through all the major 17th, 18th and 19th century collections of Scottish and Irish music, choosing from over 10,000 pieces the 29 heard here. Savall's knowledge of Renaissance and Baroque music, and his experience with Spanish, Arabic, Jewish and East Asian musical idioms, all contribute to the extraordinary success of this unique project. Savall is accompanied only by the harp of Andrew Lawrence-King, a long-time Savall associate and himself a legendary figure in early music. The Celtic Viol comes packaged with a glossy 144 page booklet.

"Savall and Andrew Lawrence-King are among the most accomplished instrumentalists and most sensitive musicians in any genre, and they play these lovely airs and dances with great elegance and respect." -BBC Music Magazine ****

"Playing on five-and six-string treble viols and a five-string treble fiddle, Savall draws inspiration from the effects harvested from live and recorded performances. As always, his own playing is ravishingly beautiful and deeply poetic. He is joined on some tracks by Andrew Lawrence-King who delicately improvises counterpoint and accompaniments over drones on an Irish harp and psalterium. There is... remarkable virtuoso display, especially in the quicker pieces, as one would expect." -Gramophone Magazine

"A couple of remarkable string-playing reflections and refractions of Celtic traditions have come my way recently: first, Jordi Savall's The Celtic Viol. It's about as far from the Chieftains as you can get, but Savall on viol and Andrew Lawrence-King on small harp find an astonishing delicacy and sensitivity in tunes by Neil Gow, O'Carolan, and traditional numbers. These are performances that both restore the melodies to the time of their composition and reveal their timeless strength and simplicity." -The Guardian
