Notes & Reviews:

John Eliot Gardiner's Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine award-winning Bach Cantata series on SDG continues with five Cantatas for the Sixth and Seventh Sunday after Trinity (BWV 9, 107, 170, 186 & 187), recorded live at the prestigious Ansbach Bach Festival and at St. Mary's church in Haddington, Scotland in July and August 2000. Also included is a favorite encore work, the motet Der Gerechte kommt um. Once attributed to Bach, this beautiful five-voiced motet was composed by Johann Kuhnau.

BBC Music Magazine
Best known among this clutch of cantatas is the solo alto 'Vergnngte Ruh'. Michael Chance turns in a fervent performance, tonally pure and full of expressive nuance. Praise, too, to Susanne Regel for her sensitive oboe d'amore playing.

Sunday Times
Given two separate quartets of soloists, and different configurations of Gardiner's elite choir and period-instrument band, the results are remarkably consistent, thanks to the force of the conductor's single-minded personality, unrepentant in his preference for medium-scale Bach...collectors of the series won't be disappointed.
