The most beautifully sung account I have heard in years, with perfect intonation throughout... Ondine's superb sound is also the finest on offer, exquisitely balanced between voice and piano, with depth and just the right degree of resonance. Where it counts, Isokoski and her partner catch the essence of Hindemith's music to near perfection: just listen to the final trilogy of "Vom Tode Mariäe" to hear the quality.

Who's afraid of Hindemith?
Although I was familiar with the names of the composer and singer, I knew nothing about this music itself when I first put the CD in my player. Sometimes, you hear a contemporary work, and wonder how the performers ever memorized it. Not here: The vocal line in 'Das Marienleben' is angular without being forbidding, and the piano part is more than mere accompaniment. I was soon quite absorbed, and encourage anyone with a hankering to investigate 20th century vocal music to give it a try. Isokoski and Viitasalo are fine performers, and the balance between voice and piano seems ideal, with neither obscuring the other. The booklet includes all the texts (by Rainer Maria Rilke) and translations, as well as notes on the history of the work.

Soile Isokoski’s recording of Paul Hindemith’s Das Marienleben (New Version 1948) is garnering outstanding reviews and accolades throughout the international press (ODE 1148-2). The recording features the Finnish star soprano with her longtime piano duo partner Marita Viitasalo. Together, they perform the revised 1948 version of Hindemith’s 1923 cycle on fifteen poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. The work remains a highlight in the German composer’s output, and Glenn Gould once called it "the greatest song cycle ever written." The Washington Post has listed the CD at the top of its selection of best classical music recordings in 2009. Classical music critic Anne Midgette wrote, "Hindemith’s cycle on Rilke poems, a highlight of his career, may never have sounded better." David Hurwitz from ClassicsToday.com presented the recording as Disc of the Month in February 2010 and gave it a 10/10 accolade for both artistic and sound quality. He wrote, "Isokoski captures every nuance of the text while at the same time retaining that special, slightly understated intimacy of expression that both the poetry and the music demand. Pianist Marita Viitasalo is very much an equal partner in the proceedings, projecting Hindemith's often bare and potentially clunky writing (...) with unflagging elegance and limpid tone." In Belgium, this CD was given the Prix Caecilia 2009 by the association of professional music critics (Union de la Presse Musicale Belge).
