Notes & Reviews:

Of Julius Roentgen's twenty-five symphonies, only three were performed during the composer's lifetime. Roentgen completed his eighth symphony in 1930, during the same year that his biography of Edvard Grieg was published by Kruseman in The Hague. In this book Roentgen recalled his various trips to Jotunheim, which he visited three times with Grieg and their common friend Frants Beyer. Accordingly, the elemental sound of the orchestra in the eighth symphony, marked by harsh woodwinds, is sometimes reminiscent of Grieg's orchestral works.
