Notes & Reviews:

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's nineteen-year tenure with the Minnesota Orchestra (1960-1979) was one of the great American musical partnerships, yielding several highly acclaimed recordings that have stood the test of time. Among them is this recording of two of Bartok's masterpieces, considered among the greatest orchestral works of the 20th century. The Concerto for Orchestra was written in 1943 in response to a commission from Serge Koussevitsky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; the work's success, coming after a period of illness and isolation, afforded the composer one final triumph before his death in 1945, collapsing on Manhattan's 57th Street.
