Notes & Reviews:

The whimsically named FAST CATS AND MYSTERIOUS COWS is a joyous collection of American songs for both choir and solo voice. Some of America's finest composers are represented in this collection, including Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein. The recording also boasts works by such lesser-known composers as Norman Dello Joio, Libby Larsen and Malcolm Bruno.

Copland's 'Old American Songs' opens the program with delightful choral arrangements of the solo voice chestnut. The American Boychoir sings brilliantly and their interpretations are filled with humor. On a more serious note is Barber's 'Mélodies passagères,' a collection of Rilke poems sung with golden tone by soprano Patricia Petibon. Special note should be paid to Ned Rorem's 'What Is Pink,' a delicate song animated by its ornate piano accompaniment, commissioned by the American Boychoir in 1987. FAST CATS is an ear-opening exploration of the American art song that will delight all vocal music fans.
