Performer Composers

Notes & Reviews:

"This is an all-Argentinian program presented by an Argentinian pianist. If that suggests a uniformity of style in the music, it is borne out here. The culture of Argentina is strong and proud, and, perhaps abetted by geographical isolation, very traditional over the century-plus range represented by the seven composers presented here. Monotony is avoided by the subtle drama that makes this music so attractive, irresistible, really: the subtle combination of melancholy, nostalgia, sexuality, and yes, esperanza, hope. Dance rhythms and syncopation characterize much of this music, though generally at a rather low temperature, with the most distinctive sounds emanating from the pen of Alberto Ginastera, arguably the most significant composer produced by Argentina to date. I must admit that he and Piazzolla are the only composers here that I have heard previously, but although there were no revelations, it is all alluring and charming. Rosa Antonelli has the full measure of her program, which she dispatches with skill, sensuality and obvious affection." - Peter Burwasser, Fanfare
