Remarks:

Based on Schiller's play 'Don Carlos', Verdi's magnificent and arguably greatest opera has everything: deeply felt personal passion and pain intertwined in the web of political and religious agendas - utterly relevant to today and superbly expressed in a score of gripping intensity. The recording, made in Leeds Town Hall during Opera North's May / June production run, has a stellar cast including Janice Watson, Alastair Miles and Sir John Tomlinson with Richard Farnes conducting. The Observer commented on the performance: 'The work came alive as never before, its passionate exchanges between king, son, stepmother and loyal friends all the more incandescent, an endorsement for the Peter Moores "Opera in English" series on Chandos, who recorded this 'Don Carlos' for future release.'
