Notes & Reviews:

Thomas Arne's 'Artaxerxes' was the first opera seria libretto in English. Arne's work was a huge success in large part because it was an excellent vehicle for great singing. The aria "The Soldier, tir'd of War's Alarms" remained a show-piece for sopranos through much of the nineteenth century and has never entirely dropped out of the repertory.

"...Ian Partridge, who began his solo career in 1962, proves himself another one of those singers whose work ignores the ravages of time. There's certainly no evidence of age's effects in "Thou, like the glorious Sun," where divisions, sturdy tone, breath support, and enunciation all point to a voice in its prime... Goodman is a long way in this work from his old reputation as "the human metronome," being both flexible in his phrasing, and sensitive to his material and his singers. The Parley of Instruments is, as usual, first-rate. In short, if you enjoy Baroque opera, and haven't purchased this one before, now is an excellent time to do so. You won't be disappointed." -Fanfare

'Rich orchestrations, virtuoso vocal parts and captivating tunes ... A work of many charms' (BBC Music Magazine)

'Oodles of stunning arias ... If you only buy one opera set this year, against all the odds make it Artaxerxes and prepare, like Haydn, to be amazed!' (Classic CD)

'This sparkling performance readily explains why Arne's opera was such a success when first produced at Covent Garden in 1762. Roy Goodman's direction is inspired' (The Guardian)

'A warm welcome to the first recording of this opera, a work of great historical importance and musically fascinating ... enormously enjoyable, full of good melodies, richly orchestrated, never long-winded ... This is certainly a set that I can recommend warmly to anyone curious about this byway of 18th-century opera and to anyone who is drawn to Arne's very individual and appealing style' (Gramophone)
