Notes & Reviews:

This generous holiday release (it clocks in at close to an hour) from the Motor City Brass Quintet features concise yet airy instrumental arrangements of several seasonal favorites, both sacred and secular, like "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Carol of the Bells," "Sleigh Ride," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," among others, and closes out with the recorded debut of John Harbison's impressive "Christmas Vespers," which follows the flow of a vespers service for some 24 minutes, with trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba each given thematic personification and each taking its own turn in the enactment. The whole piece, and the whole album for that matter, has a wonderful seasonal glow about it. ~ Steve Leggett
